The first consideration to take into account before buying a multifunction inkjet printer is it running costs, more specifically the cost of the printer ink cartridges. The Epson SX400 has slight advantage of the competition as it uses a more economical ink system which consists of four individual Epson ink cartridges and this enables each cartridge to be changed independently of each other therefore limiting the amount of wasted ink. A set of Epson SX400 ink cartridges are still expensive in genuine form at £30 but the equivalent compatible printer cartridges are available for around £15. The SX400’s most impressive and surprising thing is its print quality which surpasses expectations of a printer in this price bracket. Scanning is impressive with up to 1200 x 2400ppi optical resolution creating detailed scans coupled with software such as the Epson Easy Photo Fix package that can fix colour on faded photos making them even better. The scanner is also OCR compatible which means it can convert scans of printed text documents into editable files in a PC. The SX400 copier function makes use of the A4 flat bed scanner and produces great copies of all types of documents, although is not best suited to large quantities as it has a maximum of nine copies at one time and the SX400 printing slow is not the fastest in the world. The Stylus SX400 is overall a solid performer and is sure to be a hit with the home and small office users.
